With Google’s Street View, it hasn’t really done very well in the mobile world, despite the fact it’s available through the mobile versions of Google Maps and Google Earth. The problem is that Street View really hasn’t really been showcased very well on mobile devices, but that might actually change with today’s launch of the stand-alone Street View app. It’s available for both Android and iOS.
With this new app, users can search for or browse locations, allowing them to explore those places using Street View photography. Perhaps with Google Street View standing on its own, it’s possible that it could get more visibility among Google users.
The cool thing about the app is that it gives users the ability to create their own “Street Views” images through a simple process using their smartphones. The app tells you how many more pictures must be taken and where to take them until a full 360 degree panoramic “street view” is created.
Pictures can be share publiclly or privately.
I think we can all imagine the fun we’d have creating these “street view” images of our rooms and the like, it’s possible that it could have great marketing potential for business owners and marketers. You want to take interior pictures of what your store looks like? You can do that. Are you a real estate agent trying to sell a house? You can take 360 degree images of the house you’re trying to sell.
This version of Street View has come after Microsoft decided to discontinue a similar app, Photosynth.
