Day-of-the-dead-2015-5717621009809408-hp2x-800x189For today’s Google logo doodle, the Day of the Dead is being celebrated.  Also known as Dia de lost Muertos, the Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday devoted to those souls that have departed.

The Google logo was designed by Kevin Laughlin, and it depicts a traditional Day of the Dead string of decorative tissues made of perforated paper, or papel picado,  that is draped over windowsill and doorways during the course of the three-day festivities.

Día de los Muertos. Day of the Dead. Its name is decidedly somber, but Mexico’s celebration of its departed souls overflows with color, music, and the unmistakable fragrances of its wonderful cuisine.
