With the European Union (EU) calling for the suspension of data transfers for Facebook regarding its EU users to the US (this preliminary order was sent to Facebook by the European Union), Facebook released an official response saying they might be forced to end European operations entirely. This would include Instagram as well.

The order would make Facebook keep user data in Europe, which wouldn’t be good for the company, as it’s both restrictive and expensive.

Facebook said, as reported by Vice:

“If the decision is upheld, “it is not clear to [Facebook] how, in those circumstances, it could continue to provide the Facebook and Instagram services in the EU,” said Yvonne Cunnane, who is Facebook Ireland’s head of data protection and associate general counsel.”
