On February 6th, Google updated their Google Maps app for Android, adding three brand new tabs that display real-time info on nearby places, traffic conditions and public transit schedules.
In the announcement, we found out that by swiping up from the bottom of the Google Maps home screen, three different tabs will appear – a Places tab, a Driving tab and a Transit tab.
The Places Tab
With the Places tab, users will get a curated list of nearby restaurants, and even info on nearby ATMs, pharmacies, gas stations and grocery stores.
The Driving Tab
In this tab, users will be able to see nearby traffic conditions and real-time ETAs (assuming the user has their home and work addresses saved). If you tap on the “start driving” option will prompt real-time traffic info during route.
The Transit Tab
The Transit tab will display bus and train recommendations depending on the user’s saved home and traffic addresses, along with ETAs for arrival times. If you’re interested in train and bus schedules.
Google Maps product manager Marcus Lowe had this to say:
“Whether you need to get to work or you’re just looking for a quick bite around you, Google Maps gives you personalized information about your world so you can make decisions and get around with confidence.”
