According to Wikipedia, a hashtag is “a word or an unspaced phrase with the hash character to form a label. Words or phrases in messages on microblogging and social networking services such as Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter or VK may be tagged by entering # before them, either as a they appear in a sentence, or appended to it.”
With a hashtag, messages can be grouped together with similarly tagged messages, allowing users to search and return all messages of a queried hashtag search.
Because of the overwhelming use and popularity of the hashtag, hashtag support has been added to most popular social media platforms. Ann Smarty has written an article for Moz.com that shows how different social media sites make use of hashtags, as well as insights into how you can effectively make the most use out of hashtags for your brand.
