According to a national tech survey, a relatively small percentage of people know that Instagram is owned by Facebook.
Americans were surveyed by the Verge to find out what big tech companies are the most trusted, and which ones should be broken up.
Part of the data shows Americans’ knowledge of who owns what with regards to big tech companies being owned by other big tech companies.
According to results of the survey:
- 47% of respondents know Google owns YouTube
- 38% of respondents know Facebook owns Instagram
- 29% of respondents know Facebook owns WhatsApp
- 12% of respondents know Amazon owns Twitch
After almost 8 years of Instagram being owned by Facebook, most people didn’t even know that the Facebook owned the latter. The interesting part about it is that there are some who refuse to use Facebook, but will turn around and devote themselves to Instagram in the same breath.
Last November, Facebook took on a rebranding effort which saw the company adding “from Facebook” to Instagram and WhatsApp.
Even though many of the respondents didn’t know about the Facebook/Instagram connection, the sentiment towards the two companies are about the same. According to results of The Verge’s survey, Instagram and Facebook have a favorability rating of 72% and 71% respectively.
Amazon and Google have the highest ratings at 91% and 90%. Twitter is sitting dead last with a favorability rating of just 61%.
