Humans have a lifetime of heuristics, emotions, memories and knowledge that allow us to weigh many small factors subconsciously and arrive at an intuitive understanding that feels visceral. This helps guide decision making and judgment in important areas like interpersonal relationships, social norms, and assessing people’s motivations where data is unclear.
Advances in context learning and common sense knowledge may one day allow AI to simulate human intuition more closely. But the innate intuition humans develop through embodied experience in the world provides an advantage over today’s neural networks that have no such opportunity. Humans can size up situations and read between the lines in ways current AI cannot match.
Common sense is another aspect of intelligence that comes naturally to humans but remains a challenge for AI. Common sense refers to the knowledge and reasoning about the everyday physical and social world that allows humans to function. We accumulate vast amounts of common sense knowledge simply by living life – understanding concepts like object permanence, intentions of other people, cause and effect of events, and social dynamics.
This common sense helps humans efficiently process and respond to new situations. If we see a glass fall off a table, we intuitively know it will break and make a loud sound. We do not need to mathematically model the physics or analyze thousands of examples of falling glasses. But current AI systems lack this basic common sense reasoning ability. Unless explicitly trained on falling objects, an AI would not know what to predict about a glass falling.
Humans also leverage common sense for social reasoning – understanding human motivations, interpreting emotions, and navigating cultural norms. We can adapt quickly in social situations using unwritten rules learned over time. AI today struggles with this implicit knowledge, like distinguishing ironic humor from literal meaning. While common sense reasoning has long been a goal for AI, the inability of machines to acquire this knowledge as humans do through experience continues to separate human and machine intelligence.
The innate common sense humans develop by simply existing in the physical and social world provides us with an adaptability and contextual reasoning ability that even the most advanced AI lacks. This gives humans a distinct advantage in reasoning about and operating within the messy real world.
The Ethical Implications of Creating AI More Intelligent Than Humans
What would it mean for humans to be subservient to machines?

What are the risks of AI systems being used for malicious purposes?
Even before AI reaches human levels of general intelligence, there are risks posed by malicious use of AI systems. As AI capabilities grow more powerful, the potential for weaponization and abuse by bad actors increases.
AI could be used to develop more devastating cyberattacks, sophisticated disinformation campaigns, undetectable deepfakes, and lethal autonomous weapons. Groups could exploit AI to analyze massive surveillance datasets, crack encryption, enhance social engineering, and automate hacking at scale. The same techniques that show promise for benefiting society – like natural language processing and generative models – could be twisted to manipulate, deceive, and harm.
Regulating and restricting access to the most dangerous AI applications will be crucial. However, the digital nature of AI makes controlling its spread difficult. The information wants to be free, and AI is data. The expertise and computing power needed to build advanced AI is also diffusing rapidly. The window for preventing criminal or despotic misuse of AI may be short.
This threat calls for proactive efforts among policymakers, researchers, tech companies, and defense organizations to implement strong safety standards, fail-safes, and monitoring of AI systems. AI offers massive upside, but it could enable dystopian outcomes if handled recklessly. Maintaining public trust and ensuring AI improves human lives, rather than imperiling them, must remain top priorities.
The Challenges of Developing Safe and Ethical AI
Creating AI systems that are unambiguously beneficial to humanity will require overcoming significant technical and ethical challenges.

Questions related to transparency, bias, accountability, privacy, autonomy, and control will become even more salient with further progress in AI capabilities. Researchers and practitioners have a responsibility to proactively assess AI applications for potential harms, especially to marginalized groups.
Governance and policy mechanisms must be enacted to ensure ethical AI development. Audits, impact assessments, codes of conduct and other frameworks will be necessary to uphold principles human rights, justice and human dignity. Managing AI risks cannot be left solely to tech companies – broader societal engagement on these difficult issues is vital.
Creating AI that enhances humanity without harming it will require both wisdom and ingenuity. We must nurture a culture and practice of responsible innovation, considering both technical rigor and ethical discernment at each step. The development of AI that is trustworthy, aligned with human values and securely controlled poses scientific and ethical challenges unlike any other technological advance. Meeting this responsibility fully will require humanity’s best efforts across disciplines.
