For all the hype surrounding AI, and its undeniable potential in various applications, it seems social media platforms are struggling to find truly valuable use cases. Or perhaps I’m just not seeing the big picture.

Meta’s recent experiments with celebrity-styled AI chatbots, both in text and video form, have raised eyebrows. While the initial idea of conversing with AI impersonations of celebrities might have seemed intriguing, the novelty quickly wore off. The lack of genuine human connection and the underlying realization that you’re essentially interacting with a sophisticated algorithm made these experiences feel hollow.

Social media has traditionally been about connecting with people from all walks of life. The ability to engage with celebrities, even virtually, has been a significant draw. However, Meta’s AI bots threaten to undermine this aspect of social media. By blurring the lines between human and machine, they could erode the authenticity and value of celebrity interactions.

While AI-generated content has its place, it’s essential to maintain a balance between human-driven content and AI-generated content. Overreliance on AI could lead to a less engaging and authentic social media experience.

As Meta continues to explore AI-powered features, it’s crucial to consider the potential consequences. Are we moving towards a future where social media is dominated by AI-generated content, devoid of genuine human connection? Or can AI be harnessed to enhance social experiences while preserving the core values of human interaction?

Only time will tell. But for now, it’s clear that Meta’s AI bots are a step in the wrong direction.
