YouTube has officially rolled out expanded access to its auto-dubbing feature, allowing creators to easily translate their content into various languages. This feature, first announced at the “Made on YouTube” event in September, enables creators to simply tick a box during the upload process to activate audio translations. While the translations may not always be perfect, YouTube is confident in its technology and believes this will significantly increase the reach of creator content.

Initially, auto-dubbing is being made available to hundreds of thousands of channels in the YouTube Partner Program that focus on knowledge and information. However, YouTube plans to expand this feature to other content types soon. The process involves identifying the original language of the video and then generating auto-dubbed versions in other languages. Currently, Google offers auto-dubbing from English to French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish, with English translations also available for each of these languages.

To mitigate potential translation errors, YouTube has added warnings to auto-dubbed clips indicating that the translations were machine-generated. This should provide some level of protection if the auto-translation inadvertently changes the original meaning or introduces offensive language.

The benefits of offering content in multiple languages are significant. The success of “Amazing Digital Circus,” one of the biggest YouTube trends this year, demonstrates the power of reaching a global audience. This cartoon’s availability in 20 different languages has contributed significantly to its widespread popularity. While creators may not achieve the same level of global fandom as “Amazing Digital Circus,” auto-dubbing can help them connect with viewers in more regions and expand their overall audience.

YouTube is currently rolling out auto-dubbing to more creators gradually. Creators can check for availability under “Advanced Settings” in YouTube Studio.
