X, formerly known as Twitter, has officially launched a dedicated video tab for its US users. This significant update replaces the “Communities” tab in the app’s bottom navigation bar with a prominent play button icon. The move comes after over a year of testing and reflects X’s increasing focus on video content, with video views on the platform surging by 40% year-over-year.
This shift in strategy marks a departure from previous Twitter management’s emphasis on simplicity and minimizing distractions in the app’s interface. Notably, the introduction of “Moments” in 2015, a feature that added an extra button to the lower bar, was met with internal concern and ultimately removed. However, with X’s user growth stagnating at around 250 million daily active users for over two years, the company may now prioritize the needs and preferences of its existing user base, even if it means a slightly more complex interface.
The dedicated video tab provides users with a more streamlined way to discover and enjoy X’s growing library of video content, including short-form clips, live streams, and longer-form videos. X aims to leverage this dedicated space to enhance user engagement and create new opportunities for video advertising.
While the initial rollout is limited to the US, a broader global release of the dedicated video tab is expected in the coming months. This move underscores X’s commitment to transforming into a “video-first” platform, aligning with the evolving trends in social media consumption.
