YouTube is introducing a new feature designed to simplify Shorts creation for its creators. This feature allows the platform to automatically identify and extract the most engaging segments from longer-form videos, then publish them as separate 16:9 Shorts. This automated process aims to streamline Shorts creation for YouTubers, encouraging them to leverage this popular content format without the need for additional effort.

As per YouTube:

We’re experimenting with a feature that lets creators easily cut out engaging segments from long-form videos on YouTube and instantly publish them as separate 16:9 videos. If you’re a creator in the experiment, you will see the option to ‘Create a video highlight’ in the video editor tool in YouTube Studio Desktop.”

Currently, this feature is undergoing testing with a limited number of creators and is restricted to English-language videos. Participating creators will find an option labeled “Create a video highlight” within the video editor tool in YouTube Studio Desktop. By selecting this option, YouTube’s algorithm will analyze the longer video, pinpoint the most engaging sections based on viewer interaction and watch time, and automatically generate and publish these segments as standalone Shorts.

This development holds significant potential for both creators and the platform itself. Shorts have become a cornerstone of YouTube’s growth, amassing over 70 billion daily views. By facilitating effortless Shorts creation, YouTube can encourage more creators to embrace this format, potentially leading to a surge in Shorts content and increased engagement across the platform.

While the automated process offers convenience, creators may still need to perform some editing to ensure the extracted segments function effectively as standalone Shorts. However, this feature represents a significant step towards making Shorts creation more accessible and efficient for YouTubers, allowing them to capitalize on the popularity of short-form video content with minimal extra effort.
