With the new data tracking prompts that rolled out with Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, Facebook has decided that they were going to add a new element to its own iOS 14.5 prompts where they are trying to encourage users to keep data tracking on when using the Facebook app.

Facebook’s tactic is to add a new element to its in-app alerts to ‘Help keep Facebook/Instagram free of charge’, which could be taken as a bit of a scare tactic or even a veiled threat.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, during his 2018 testimony to Congress:

“Yes, there will always be a version of Facebook that is free […] We think offering people an ad-supported service is the most aligned with our mission of trying to connect everyone in the world, because we want to offer a free service that everyone can afford. That’s the only way we can reach billions of people.”
