Google users are being presented with a new mobile layout for Custom Search. Included in the new refreshed look includes the search box and refinements, thumbnails and pagination. The changes are affecting mainly mobile searchers, although desktop users are seeing some of the updates as well.
The updated Custom Search laying is a step forward to giving mobile users a fluid experience that is important to converting. It can even help improve behavioral success metrics.
Sites that monetize using AdSense search ads may also stand to earn more from mobile traffic.
Despite having 630,000 sites using this product, prior to this announcement, the Custom Search Blog had not received an update since July, 2018.
Here’s what’s changed:
- Search box and refinements are now more distinct.
- Thumbnail size has increased.
- Pagination has been simplified.
Site owners have the option of disabling the mobile-specific changes by setting the “mobileLayout” attribute of the search element to “disabled.”
